Vehicle design and safety-driver status are separate. A Model Y with no safety driver is still a Model Y. The US Cybercab category currently contains 319 verified unique vehicles from the Texas DMV roster. Nationwide coverage is incomplete; other states and city allocations are not yet verified. This reference stays fixed when selecting a city and does not establish active service. These counts must not be added together.

Nationwide Cybercab coverage: Texas DMV is the only verified source currently loaded. That roster publishes VIN and model only — no city. Other states are not loaded yet. Community sightings (Robotaxi Tracker, a separate source) have tagged 105 Cybercabs on the road (Austin); 102 of them publish a VIN found on this Texas roster. Sightings are not a complete map of the Texas registrations. A listing does not establish passenger-service status.

739 vehicles on Texas AV roster · observed October 10, 2026. Counted directly from all 739 unique VIN records: 319 Cybercabs and 420 Model Ys. Roster inclusion does not establish current passenger service. This statewide snapshot stays fixed when you select a city.

Nationwide model totals: not verified. Do not subtract these Texas registrations from the 1,162 community service roster or the 459 unsupervised count.

Austin launch was September 3 — not September 5

Tesla’s public Cybercab launch in Austin was Thursday, September 3, 2026, with limited-area rides and an invite-only event (AP/Reuters). September 5 on this tracker is only when our daily Texas DMV Cybercab history begins. By that first retained observation the Texas roster already showed 45 Cybercabs — so Sep 5 is a data-start date, not Tesla’s rollout day.

Quiet launch — no livestream

The Austin debut was invite-only with no livestream. Reporting said guests were asked to hold posts until hours after the event started, and Musk was not there. A quieter rollout than the product’s marketing weight suggested.

NHTSA opened AQ26002 on launch day

On September 3, 2026 — the same day commercial Cybercab rides began in Austin — NHTSA opened Audit Query AQ26002 into how Tesla self-certified a vehicle with no steering wheel, pedals, or mirrors under federal safety standards. The September 4 press release frames it as an audit of process and technical data. It is not a ban, recall, or stop-sale.

No exterior mirrors either

Beyond the missing wheel and pedals, NHTSA’s Cybercab description also notes the vehicles lack permanently attached conventional mirrors. That is part of why federal standards written for traditional cars are the focus of AQ26002.

Sworn answers due September 30

NHTSA later issued a Special Order under AQ26002 requiring Tesla to submit complete, sworn answers by September 30, 2026 on Cybercab certification — including temporary controls, whether a human can drive the vehicle, and operating limits such as speed or geography. That deadline is the next hard federal date on the file.
